Hey guys! Check out Genie from the Gallivanting Bean, this week’s featured blogger!
Hi! My name is Genie Patra and I’m the founder of Gallivanting Bean, a travel & style blog. I boarded my very first plane when I was only 6 months old and my love for traveling has just grown increasingly ever since! My goal is to reach all 7 continents by the time I’m 25. I just turned 21 and I have already been to 4 out of the 7 continents, so I’m definitely on track to reach my goal! I love traveling because it introduces me to new people, new places, and new experiences. When I travel I get to pull myself out of my own little world and step into another person’s shoes. It’s amazing what you can learn if you just keep your mind open!
1. First of all, what are your website and social media links?
Here’s the whole list!
2. How did you come up with your website name?
I just adore how the word gallivant sounds carefree. I wanted my site to be an escape from the stresses of everyday life not only for myself but for my readers as well! Gallivant was the perfect word to encompass this feel. Now, bean is much more sentimental. A lot of my best friends call me bean because it rhymes a bit with my name. Gene bean is how that goes. Each of my best friends have been there with me through this crazy roll coaster of a life. They are my support system and I know that they will always be there to catch me when I fall. I wanted to incorporate the influence that my friends have had on me throughout the years into my blog. Without them none of this would be possible.
3. What more can you tell us about your blog? What are your goals or intentions for it?
Well my blog is not just about travel! It is also about style and Los Angeles, my city. In the style section I post my personal style looks and I have been working on building a street style section as well. As for the Los Angeles section, I wanted to give my readers a guide to Los Angeles through my eyes. It’s a chance for my readers to step into my shoes in my city! So all the recommended restaurants, work out studios, places to shop, etc. are the best in my opinion.
4. Can you provide us with a Throw Back Thursday picture of one of your favorite travel memories with an explanation?
Yes of course! The picture is of me in front of Big Ben in London. It’s from when I studied abroad in the summer of 2014. I absolutely love this shot of me because it really shows how excited I am to be abroad!
5. Which are your favorite and least favorite cities you’ve traveled to? Why?
It’s so hard to choose a favorite city! My favorite country is definitely Australia but my favorite city would have to be Berlin, Germany. I am extremely interested in World War II so Berlin was the perfect place to be to do some on site research about the war. Aside from that, Berlin is a great place to meet other travelers! I met people from Switzerland, England, and even California! Also, public transportation there is amazing. All the trains and trams are on time, safe, and clean. It was so easy to get around and if you get lost it’s not hard to find someone willing to help.
6. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? Where?
Being half Chinese I have eaten a lot of strange things. I’ve had intestines, chicken feet, jellyfish, crocodile, pigeon, and the list just keeps going! I think the strangest thing I’ve eaten is probably
7. Who are your travel idols?
My travel idol is Kristina Bazan of Kayture. Not only is she jetting off around the world every day but she looks fabulous while she’s doing it!
8. What’s your best travel tip?
I believe that everything and everywhere is worth experiencing at least once. So don’t cross anything off your list just because it’s too touristy or has bad reviews. You never know what you’ll find!
9. Which is your favorite post you’ve written? Please provide a link.
My favorite post that I’ve written so far is about my time in Oahu, Hawaii this past year. I went because my uncle was getting married but ended up just exploring all the delicious foods on the island! So the post is most definitely mainly about all the food I ate!
10. What advice would you give to someone new to travel blogging?
If you can, write about all your experiences! Your stories don’t have to be about the white sand beaches in Fiji. They can be about places only an hour away from you or even places in your very own hometown. Like I said everything and everywhere is worth experiencing at least once, and I promise someone in this world hasn’t experienced what you’re writing about.
