This week I’ve got Yvonne!
Hi! I’m Yvonne, a solo female traveler, who is currently writing from out the Netherlands but dreaming about the world. Yeah, you can say that I have restless feet, and whenever I can travel.. I WILL travel. My love for travel started at an early age, just as my love for writing. A year ago it all came together, and that is why I can now proudly call myself a travel blogger!
1. First of all, what are your website and social media links?
Website link: http://thetouristoflife.com
2. How did you come up with your website name?
I feel like tourists are positive people: they want to explore countries, see and experience things and they are generally ‘more happy’ because they are traveling or relaxing. Wouldn’t it be great if we were always feeling like this? If we were always looking for ways to explore and if we were always feeling like we are in travel-mode. That is why I named my blog the tourist of life: in stead of only being a tourist once in a while we should experience life, cultures, holidays, landscapes.. everything as if we are tourists!
3. What more can you tell us about your blog? What are your goals or intentions for it?
I see a lot of blogs only writing about the highlights of cities. I mean how many articles have you read saying ‘you must visit the Eiffel Tower in Paris’. Well, I mean.. of course you should! I wanted to start my blog to write more about destinations and I want to write about other experiences. But most of all I want to inspire my readers (mostly solo and female travelers) to look beyond what they already know. In addition to that I write about my personal travel experiences to inspire other solo female travelers. As I know that articles like these from other bloggers have really helped me: ‘ oh she is traveling solo to that destination.. so I can do it too!’.
4. Can you provide us with a Throw Back Thursday picture of one of your favorite travel memories with an explanation?
You know.. that is such a heard question! I have so much travel memories that I treasure. I think my road trip through the USA was definitely my favorite trip. But one of my first solo trips (to Dublin) was awesome! I’ve been to so many wonderful destinations and I’ve done so much amazing stuff it is hard to choose only one favorite. Still, I think that I am going for my hike through Bryce Canyon. I always appreciate a good hike, and hiking in the USA was like a dream coming true. What a magnificent view!
5. Which are your favorite and least favorite cities you’ve traveled to? Why?
My least favorite city isn’t hard to choose: Naples, Italy. The moment I arrived I thought ‘this is it?’ I didn’t spent much time in the city after that. In stead I escaped to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. Naples was dirty, it looked kind of scary (even though I didn’t actually felt scared) and it was just completely ruined. There was one square that had a magnificent castle kinda building on it. What do you think? Completely covered in graffiti, with an open sewage next to it. No there was nothing pretty in Naples. The locals weren’t that friendly either. But I also think it was because I went in autumn, high season was over, and the locals didn’t seem to enjoy my ‘late’ visit.
My favorite city is Paris. Always choose Paris. Paris is just such a charming city, beautiful in every season, magical on every hour of the day. I loved it from the moment I first layer eyes on it. Paris is a girls dream. And I am definitely a girl;-)
6. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? Where?
I’m not a big fan of strange eating plus I am a vegetarian. So it is not like I eat strange fish, dogs or pig eyes or something like that. Being a vegetarian always leaves you with some safe options: pizza, noodles, veggie dishes, or soups or something like that. In the Czech Republic (in the smaller villages) they however had very little for the vegetarian. So I was stuck with eating 500 grams of cheese. Which is apparently a very normal dish in the Czech Republic. I had never heard of it before though.
7. Who are your travel idols?
I love the story of Cheryl Strayed from the movie and book Wild. Further than that I follow some random people on Instagram who I admire, but they are not really idols. I follow some people who bike around the world, or gave up everything at home to travel or to move. I love those stories!
8. What’s your best travel tip?
Oef, that is a hard question. I have so many travel tips, from packing hacks to budget tips. I think my best travel tip is to travel without a plan. That will leave you being relaxed and with the time to meet some new friends or locals. You’ll have the time to become adventurous and spontaneous and eventually then you’ll get the best memories!
9. Which is your favorite post you’ve written? Please provide a link.
10. What advice would you give to someone new to travel blogging?
Stay close to yourself and your own memories. There is a lot of travel information out there in the world, but no one has written down your story yet. Never forget to express yourself and to tell your own opinion! People will follow you because they want to hear your experiences. So you should tell them your experiences. Also, unique photography does quite the trick on social media!
