California provides plenty of great big-city tourism options with a attractions that work for everyone. From families, to couples, and to adventure-seekers, here are five cities that no California tourist should miss and hotel suggestions from Hipmunk itself.
If you’re looking for a fun trip to Los Angeles but don’t want to pay the high LA prices, Ontario, CA is a great option to stay at if you don’t mind the long drive back and forth to the city. Cheaper hotels include the Comfort Suites, Red Roof Inn, and the Best Western – all of which are close to the Ontario airport. For a break from the big city, Ontario itself can provide some fun attractions as well. Ontario Mills Mall is perfect for shoppers with over two hundred stores, and if one can’t get enough then checking out Victoria Gardens, an outdoor mall, can provide more shopping options.
A popular side-trip for visitors to San Francisco, Oakland, CA, there are plenty of great hotel options for those considering staying for a night or two. The Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Oakland and the Best Western Plus Airport Inn & Suites provide perfect accommodations within a reasonable budget, or else plenty of other budget-friendly chains such as Super 8 and La Quinta are available as well. Travelers will love the Bay Area Rapid Transit system and access to the beautiful natural attractions, including Lake Merritt and Redwood Regional Park.
Universal City, CA
For those visiting Universal City, CA, there are plenty of perfect hotel accommodations. The BLVD Hotel & Spa is a great choice for couples and for families the Best Western Plus Media Center Inn & Suites is a great location to the main attractions of Universal Studios, Universal CityWalk and Warner Bros. Studios. Shoppers will love visiting famous Rodeo Drive and Melrose Avenue and tourists should keep their eyes out for celebrities – especially when visiting Beverly Hills.
South San Francisco, CA
Staying further away from San Francisco’s tourist-crazy bay area is key to securing within-budget accommodations. South San Francisco, CA, has several hotel and AirBnB options to meet this need, including Quality Inn & Suites South San Francisco and Holiday Inn Express South San Francisco-Airport. Getting out of the tourist zone in the north, travelers should check out Sign Hill and Orange Memorial Park for hiking and more outdoor fun. It’s suggested to visit South San Francisco between September to November when school is in session to avoid the large throngs of tourist families.
Although visitors mainly seek out Pasadena, CA for its famous festivals, parades, and of course the iconic Rose Bowl, those looking to stay on the cheap are advised to avoid these events. Colorado Boulevard will have the least expensive hotels, including Ramada Inn Pasadena and Sheraton Pasadena Hotel. Visitors will love checking out the Huntington Library and checking out an original Gutenberg Bible as well as a visit to Pasadena’s Botanical Gardens. Shoppers will love the Rose Bowl Flea Market – just make sure to get there early as people start their shopping at 5:00am.
