Featured Blogger: Candice Does the World

This week we look into the colorful world of Candice Walsh, a seasoned traveler as well as a staff member at MatadorU.
1. First of all, what are your website and social media links?

CandiceDoestheWorld.com, candicewalsh on Instagram and Twitter, and Facebook.com/CandiceDoestheWorld

2. How did you come up with your website name?

I have no idea, but I hate it. I wish I had chosen something more professional sounding, although I’m happy it’s memorable at least. And people seem terribly attached to it, so perhaps it’s just me and the traveller’s nature of never being settled on one thing.

3. What more can you tell us about your blog? What are your goals or intentions for it?

I mostly use it as a portfolio these days, really. And as a way to keep my family and friends updated on my whereabouts. It’s for fun! I’ve been blogging since I was in junior high.

4. Can you provide us with a Throw Back Thursday picture of one of your favorite travel memories with an explanation?

TBT: My first trip ever abroad, I studied in Harlow, England. I was 21, and this pic is taken on my first-ever flight, on my first-ever trip outside my province. My Harlow roommate and I had just watched The Bridge to Terabithia, hence the red eyes.

5. Which are your favorite and least favorite cities you’ve traveled to? Why?

My favourite, most recently, has been Sarajevo. There’s so much history there, and the people are kinda and wonderful, and they won’t hesitate to tell you about living through the Siege. Plus it’s cheap as heck, and there are lots of neat little bohemian pubs and cafes. My least favourite might be Paris or London. Big crowded cities just aren’t really my thing, y’know?

6. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten? Where?

I’ve eaten some weird fairground food at the Calgary Stampede, including deep-fried butter and chocolate-covered bacon. I also ate puffin in Iceland, which was kinda weird considering they’re a protected species in my home province.

7. Who are your travel idols?

I’m a big fan of The Idiot Abroad. Because I can relate.

8. What’s your best travel tip?

Don’t be apologetic about your travel style. It doesn’t matter if you’re a luxury traveller, or a heavy packer, or a group traveller. Whatever. Just do it.

9. Which is your favorite post you’ve written? Please provide a link.

Most recently, my blog post about my decision to travel around the Balkans for six months: http://www.candicedoestheworld.com/2014/02/leaving-also-known-survival/

10. What advice would you give to someone new to travel blogging?

Give it time, and don’t give up! It took me years to build my following. I’m glad I did it.

  1. Deep fried butter and chocolate covered bacon both sound amazing! I wish we had fairground food like that in the UK – that throws candyfloss and donuts right out of the picture!
